Fairness for Agency Workers

We, the undersigned, support the North West TUC's campaign for fair treatment for Agency Workers.

We urge all employers to immediately ensure that all agency workers have equal pay and conditions when they do the same jobs as permanent staff.

That's only fair.

"I'm an agency worker for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. I find it ironic that the very organisation that should be promoting equality is perpetuating a two tier workforce. BIS agency workers are just second-class citizens- we have significantly lower pay rates, less holiday and most of all no job security compared to our permanent colleagues. "

"I worked a year for Manpower at BT. Was the most miserable time of my life. I suffered clinical depression as a result of the stress and could not afford time off without satisfactory sick pay. I had a breakdown while at work and was dismissed for Gross Misconduct as a result. The Union was pathetically weak in their response and I feel despair that people can be treated in this way."

"l have worked for a council for 15months in the same job, have tried to be made permanant but they keep coming up with excuses, l am fed up with having to wait for months before l can take any leave due as l have to accrue them, then l have to be carefull as l don't get paid bank holidays l have to use me hard earned hourly entitlement, come the end of the year l am so knackered l become ill, also l cannot carry over any hours to the new year l have to take them or loose them!! so from each january it takes me 6 months to save up a 2 week holiday!! which does not happen because of the easter & may breaks l have to use else l don't get paid!! can't wait fo get same benifets as perm staff let it happen NOW PLEASE....."

"easy to understand why agency staffing appeals to employers, but full time staff have a responsibility too especially union members . in fact no support has been shown by full time staff ,who because of poor management leave work undone knowing that management would rather pass it on to myself and other agency staff than take them to task,"

"Having worked for stockport council for 32 months in the same job, i asked about making it permanent and being taken on as a full time staff member, The manager said there was no possibility of it happening as i was cheap labour under the present terms of employment and the extra cost incurred in making me permanent would put a strain on the departments finances. Shortly afterwards despite having an already full working day extra work was given to me and when i started to fall behind accusations and complaints about my performance were voiced and i was told not to turn up the following week. I was replaced by an agency worker from another agency so my agency lost out on a steady stream of income and when they asked why i was given the push were told about my poor performance, The agency has effectively blackballed me by not found me work for the past 5 weeks. "I am an agency worker (receptionist)and we have been bullied to take on more work and less money: we have been refused our second pay rise. We are considered disposable regardless of the excellency of your work. All the girls have stress related issues and very low esteem!"

" I am a part time lecturer and have highlighted a serious problem with the delivery of the curriculum within my department to the relevant management hoping to get it rectified as it affects 2 year groups of GCE students and have just found out my hours are being cut and contract changed, yet nothing has been resolved re the problem!! I just don't know where to turn next!!! "

Michelle WinstanleyBt employee and CWU representative
"It's not just cowboy companies taking advantage of agency workers but also reputable companies such as Manpower ( as a supposedly caring comany I was astonished to find out they have no stress management policies for their employees) these agency staff are subjected to the same stress related work problems as permanant employees particulally in Telecom industries"

"Exploitation has no place in any society, that it takes place at all in a modern society and within a modern economy beggars belief. Shameful behaviour!."
